Everest Base Camp Trek:

Everest Base Camp Trek Firstly, your arrival in Kathmandu marks the start of the Everest Base Camp Trek. Here, you will spend an extra day for trek preparations and you may also choose to explore the city and its world heritage sites that reflect the ancient history, art, and culture.

The day after, you will get on a flight to Lukla, one of the most dangerous airports in the world. Following the Dudh Koshi River, you will trek north to Phakding. Entering the Sagarmatha National Park, you will trek to Namche Bazaar. As you hug the banks of the Imja River, you will head towards Tengboche and further continue to Dingboche. You will spend another buffer for acclamation day after the Namache bazaar and explore the village area.

Further, you trek north to the Thukla village. You will trek along the Khumbu Glacier to cross Lobuche and reach Gorak Shep. Then, another short trek across rugged and dry trails takes you to the base camp of Mt. Everest (8848m).

En route, you can relish the views of Mt. Everest along with Nuptse (7861m) and Pumo-Ri (7165m). After exploring the base camp, you return to Gorak Shep and prepare for a hike to Kala Patthar. You can enjoy a panorama of the Everest Himalayas from this vantage point. Finally, you begin the return trek and retrace your steps to Lukla. Everest Base Camp Trek explores the magical lands of the Khumbu Valley and the Himalayas on the EBC Trek. The trip takes travellers across the trails at the foothills of some of the highest mountains in the world. Also, the trek offers a close introduction to the cultural of the Sherpa ethnic group.

Similarly, the trek also offers views of mountains like Cho Oyu (8201m), Lhotse (8516m), Nuptse (7861m), and Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft) All in all, the trek ensures a blend of natural and cultural marvels of the Everest region.

Flight Delays: Due to the geographical diversity and unpredictable climate in the Himalayas, internal flights are often delayed or cancelled. Weather conditions like heavy rainfall, storms, or fog can disrupt flights. So, it is wise to spare an extra day or two as buffer days, in case of flight delays and cancellations. Likewise, it is also necessary to note that the weather conditions are great during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. If you have enough time, you can also choose road transportation in such cases.

Note: Due to the Air Traffic at Tribhuvan International Airport, all flights to and from Lukla will now be operated from Ramechhap Airport, which is a 4-hour drive from Kathmandu. The transportation to and from Ramechhap will be provided by the company. Thus, keeping a few extra days after a trek is good in case of flight delay or cancellation.

Seasons for Everest Base Camp Trek

The last reason is that you can this trek can be done in almost all seasons. Everest Base Camp Trek can be done in all months of the year, except monsoon wet moths from mid-June to mid-September. However, sometimes it is possible to trek. Just Inquire about the Trek Operators anytime you feel like doing the trek and they’ll tell you about the possibilities.

March to May will be a good time to walk around high Khumbu areas when wildflowers like rhododendron are blooming. The daytime is mostly clear for views with mild temperatures of a minimum of 0° C to a maximum of 20° C in sunlight. Mornings and evenings can be cold, depending upon the altitude with some chances of faint showers and snow sometimes.

September to December is another season that you can choose to trek to Everest Base Camp. The days are mostly clear in Autumn. The beginning months of winter will be very cold from above 2,800 m. The temperatures can reach the freezing point of a minimum of -10° C to a maximum of 15° C with small hours of sunlight, but most of the day is clear for views and walks.

Day 1 On arrival at Kathmandu airport 1,340 m meet our staff and transfer to the hotel.

You may arrive in Kathmandu at any time. When you arrive, you will be greeted by one of our airport representatives who will be waiting for you at the airport. He will help you get transferred to your Hotel.

Overnights stay at the Hotel in Kathmandu. Included: pick up on our private vehicle.
Day 2 At Kathmandu with options for the tour with time for trek preparations.

This day is reserved for a sightseeing tour around Kathmandu. You will visit the city’s major UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They include the Pashupatinath Temple, the Bouddhanath Stupa, the Swayambhunath Stupa, and the Kathmandu Durbar Square. Each of the sites presents amazing artwork done on wood, stone statues, and metal carvings. They provide insight into the historical and religious aspects of Nepal and traditional Nepali architecture. After the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel where you can prepare for the upcoming trip.

Day 3 Fly to Lukla 2,820 m (30 mins) and trek to Phakding 2,635 m – 04 hrs.

Now the real Everest Base Camp Trek begins early in the morning, you will have a short scenic flight to Lukla. You will be transferred to the airport from the Hotel, and then you will catch the morning flight to Khumbu. The short flight is quite amazing as it presents aerial views of the Himalayan periphery of Nepal rising against the terrain. Upon landing at Lukla, you will begin your trek to Phakding- one of the popular Himalayan villages of the Khumbu situated just north of Lukla. It is a rather easy trek where you can enjoy the tranquil ambience of Khumbu. The trail goes through emerald hillsides and when you approach Phakding, you will get your first glimpse of the Kusum Kangrarau Peak.

Day 4 Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m – 06 hrs.

The trail winds its way into the Dudh Koshi River Valley towards Namche. You will be making your way down the hill towards the river and trekking along its banks until you reach Monjo. From here, you will enter the Sagarmatha National Park. The trek presents amazingly verdant alpine forests of tall pine and scented cedar, home to wide species of birds and small animals of the low-lying Himalayas. Gaining steady altitude, you will trek up the hill again away from the river and through the woodlands to one of the most famous towns of the Khumbu- Namche Bazaar. You can see grand views of peaks like the Kongde RI, the Thamserku, and Everest from the town. Namche Bazaar is a major commercial hub of the region. Due to its strategic location, it was also a major trading point for Nepali and Tibetan traders in ancient times where the exchange of salt, textiles, and meat used to take place.

Day 5 At Namche Bazaar rest day with a short hike to support acclimatisation.

This day is sanctioned for acclimatization. Namche is a great place for acclimatization as it is one of the most famous Sherpa towns of Khumbu. Along with the views of the Himalayan peaks, Namche also presents a bustling Sherpa culture. Today, you can visit the popular Everest View Hotel situated a few miles ahead of town where you can sip hot butter tea on the hotel’s verandah as you look at the view of Everest peak and its neighbouring Himalayas. You can also visit the Syangboche airstrip which is located on a ridge above the town. It presents panoramic views of peaks like Lobuche, Tawache, the Ama Dablam and many more, as well as of the town below. Back at Namche, you can also visit the Sherpa Culture Museum and the Everest Photo Gallery.

Day 6 Trek to Thyangboche Monastery 3,867 m 4- 05 hrs.

Further trekking along the Dudh Koshi valley from Namche, you will be passing by Phungki Thanka, and making your way from Pheriche to the village of Thyangboche. Crossing a suspension bridge over the Imja River, you will make your way through the trans-Himalayan forests into the village situated on the confluence of the Dudh Koshi and the Imja Rivers. The ridges that surround the village of Thyangboche are filled with rhododendron trees, and the views of the mountain peaks like the Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Lhotse, Nuptse, Changtse, Everest and many more from the village are spectacular. Here, you can also visit the famous Thyangboche Monastery, a spiritual centre of the region and the largest Buddhist shrine in Khumbu. The monastery is also the site of celebrating the Mani Rimdu Festival.

Day 7 Trek to Dingboche 4,410 m 4- 05 hrs.

Trekking through alpine jade forests overshadowed by tall ivory peaks, you will cross a suspension bridge over the Imja River and pass through the village of Pangboche on your way to Dingboche today. The terrain is quite dense and the trans-Himalayan landscape is filled with small brooks and streams flowing through the chartreuse forests of rhododendrons and juniper. Dingboche is situated in the Imja River Valley and is also famously known as “the summer valley” of the region.

Day 8 Rest day at Dingboche for acclimatization and short excursion.

You will spend another acclimatization day at Dingboche today. You can visit the Nangkartshang Peak which is situated above the town’s hill ridgeline. From the peak, you can enjoy majestic views of the Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Mount Cho Oyu, Kangtega Peak, and the Everest Peaks. Nangkartshang is famous for its panoramic view of the Ama Dablam Peak in its entirety; you can see the top of the peak to its bottom from where the peak rises. After spending time at Nangkartshang taking in the views, we will return to Dingboche.

Day 9 Trek to Lobuche 4,910 m 4- 05 hrs.

From Dingboche, you will be following the trail that winds alongside the Imja River towards Lobuche- a small settlement that is towered over by the Lobuche Peaks. The trek is rather moderate and you can also notice the terrain changing from greener pastures to rocky soils and snowy barren grounds as you proceed further along the journey. You will pass Pheriche where the Trekker’s Aid Post is situated on your way to the village. Further along from Pheriche, you will reach Chupki Lharka, a rocky terrain strewn with large boulders. Ahead, the Khumbu Glacier moraine is situated amidst the boulders. Views of mountain peaks like Khumbutse, the Mahalangur Himal, Lingtren and the Pumori from the moraine are brilliant. Once the glacier pass is crossed, you can also see Mount Nuptse towering over the valley.

Day 10 Trek to Gorakshep 5,180 m and walk to Everest base camp 5,364 m 5- 06 hrs.

This is one of the most anticipated days of the trek. You will be trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest today. Trekking past the sparsely populated settlement of Gorakshep, you will finally hike towards the base camp. You will also pass by the Khumbu Glacier Moraine. Upon reaching the base camp, you can take in the scenery and enjoy your time. You can see the Khumbu Icefall from the base, and during peak expedition time, the base camp becomes a beautiful canvas of colourful tents set against the snowy fields set up by climbers doing the Everest expedition. After sending time at the base camp, you will return to Gorakshep.

Day 11 Climb to Kalapatthar 5,545 m and walk to Pheriche 4,200 m 7- 08 hrs.

Waking up before dawn, you will make your way to the vantage point of Kalapatthar with the help of your flashlight, navigating your way through the rocky terrain. Kalapatthar is the most famous vantage point of the Khumbu from where you can see a mesmerizing view of the entire Mount Everest massif. The peaks tend to change colour, going from silver to gold as the rising sun spreads its golden rays over the mountains. It is one of the most ethereal sights in the world. After enjoying that heavenly moment at Kalapatthar, you will make your way back to Pheriche, trekking along the same pathway as before. The journey downhill is easier than the trek uphill.

Day 12 Trek to Namche Bazaar via Thyangboche 5- 06 hrs.

From Pheriche, you will make your way back down the valley, hiking along the hillside track dug into the hill face itself. Crossing the Imja River again, you will reach Thyangboche. The landscape is very diverse as you will pass by the snowy fields back to greener terrains as pines and scented maples decorate the landscape. You can also see the gaping open valleys and the river flowing below as you trek on the ridge-lines of the hills. Passing by village people working on farms, collecting firewood or tending to the cattle, you will make your way back to Namche Bazaar.

Day 13 Trek to Lukla 7- 8 hrs afternoon free at leisure.

From Namche, you will make your way back through the Dudh Koshi River valley, pass by Phakding and Monjo, exit the national park and reach Lukla. Once there, you have the rest of the time to yourself, which you can spend exploring the village and talking to the locals.

Day 14 Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to the hotel with a free afternoon.

From Lukla, you will catch the early flight back to Kathmandu, saying goodbye to the mountains for the last time. In the city, you can spend your time as you please, resting or shopping, as per your preference.

Day 15 International departure for homeward bound.

Approximately three hours before your scheduled flight, you will be transferred to the airport by one of our staff members from where you will depart.

Meals and Accommodations

However, once you move away from the cities, the options for meals and accommodations in Nepal will become limited. During the treks, the best accommodations available are lodges and teahouses. They provide basic facilities for dining and lodging. These places mostly serve traditional Nepali food “Daal Bhat Tarkari” (rice, pulses, and vegetables). Similarly, there are several other food varieties like Momo, Thukpa, Thakali food, and pasta, and pizza available across Nepal.

Nepal Country Visa and Entry Procedure

Here are two ways to obtain a Nepalese visa. The first one is via the Nepalese Diplomatic Missions stationed in your country. As the second way, you can easily obtain an On-Arrival visa at the entry/exit points stationed across the country. You can fill out an application form and provide the necessary documents to receive an On-Arrival Visa. Travellers can choose different visa types according to the length of their stay in Nepal.

The visa for 15 days costs USD 30, USD 50 for 30 days, and USD 125 for 90 days. Also if your visa is about to expire but you are not yet done exploring the country, you can get your visa extended for USD 3 per day and if your visa has already expired, it costs USD 5 per day. How to reach Nepal?

International flights are only available through the only International Airport i.e. the Tribhuvan International Airport. If you are planning on travelling to Nepal by air then TIA is your only option. Flights can be boarded from India, Dubai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur among many other destinations.

Travelling by land you have two options, via India and China. There is also a direct railway line connecting India and Nepal along with several bus facilities for travelling across the border from India.

Travelling by road through India is the most easily accessible. You can travel to Nepal through Sunauli- Bhairahawa, Raxaul – Birgunj, Siliguri- Kakarbhitta, Banbasa – Mahendranagar, or Bahraich- Nepalgunj. Kodari and Kerung are two entry/exit points stationed at the Nepal-Tibet border.

Popular Destinations to Visit

There are numerous travel destinations in Nepal; each with a unique identity and story of its own. Kathmandu is one such destination, with dozens of sightseeing to do, eateries to try out, and handicrafts to shop. Next up is Pokhara which enchants its visitors with its serene lakes and the enthralling views of the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Fishtail ranges. Trekking Seasons in Nepal

Altitude Sickness

While trekking in Nepal is extremely satisfying, altitude sickness might get a better hold of you at times. The air pressure and oxygen concentration decrease the higher you travel.

As such, altitude sickness is an illness that the human body suffers from due to these reasons. The symptoms of the sickness include lack of appetite, nausea, weakness, lightheartedness, sleep disturbance, tiredness, and headache. You can adopt different measures to avoid altitude sickness like a walk at a slow and steady pace, avoiding smoking, and stopping at different stations to acclimatize. If anyone falls victim to altitude sickness, it is necessary to inform the trip leader and descend to a lower altitude. In extreme cases, it might also be necessary to perform Heli rescue and emergency evacuations.

Accidents can happen anywhere so, it is recommended that all tourists get travel insurance before visiting Nepal. Depending upon the insurance policy and the company, the insurance will look after tragic like theft, loss or accidental damage of gears and other belongings, baggage, and medical emergencies. Likewise, the insurance should also include helicopter evacuation and any kinds of mishaps that might occur during adventure sports like bungee jumping, rafting, and zip-lining. Internet and Communication

It is quite easy to access the Internet in Nepal. Using Wi-Fi is a widely used way to communicate and use the Internet. Wi-Fi is easily available in major cities and even in some remote destinations. When trekking to remote locations, Wi-Fi might not always be available; so, using cellular data is the best way to communicate over the Internet. You can buy a Sim-card in Nepal at a reasonable price which allows you to make an international call. Also, you can use mobile data while you are in areas without Wi-Fi. Telephone, Fax, and newspapers are a few other forms of communication in Nepal.

Health and Safety Including Traveling Alone in Country

The country is very safe for all tourists and travellers. The country is not experiencing any armed conflicts, religious wars, or grave crimes. Travelling alone is also perfectly sage and you will find willing Nepalese to help you with your travel issues. We also advise solo travellers to inform their loved ones and authorities like local police about their travel destination and itinerary to remain on the safe side. However, there are many issues that you need to consider to trek alone. So, you should have ample knowledge and ideas before going on a solo trek.

When can I book for Everest Base Camp Trekking?
Depending on your time requirements, you can book this trip a few months or at least a week before our departure dates. This should be after making sure that you have checked your health and physical fitness.
How many people will be in the group?
The group size ranges from a minimum of 1 person to a maximum of 10-15 persons. You can also join other groups.
How is the weather in Everest Base Camp Trekking?
From March to May, most of the day is clear with a minimum temperature of 0° C to 20 °C as the altitude increases the temperature decreases making higher areas like Tengboche, Gorakshep, and Kalapathhar and Everest base camp colder than Kathmandu and Lukla.
How are the lodges and Tea-House on Treks?
At present each village has more than 10 to 20 good lodges with pleasant rooms and they serve excellent food menus depending on the seasons. Common bathrooms and restrooms may be a probability in remote places. Do not expect much of the high-end facilities in remote parts like Tengboche and Gorakshep. All rooms and dining are equipped with heating facilities to make your stay warm and comfortable.
What happens if some is sick and has to break the trek?
Our guides and trekking crews are well equipped with knowledge and skills for these situations. You will be provided with primary health care or rush you to the nearest hospital or to Kathmandu via Helicopter depending upon the seriousness of the situation.
How much should I tip to porters and guides in Everest Base Camp Trek?
The tip amount is usually around 20% of the total wages of porters and guides. So, you may tip $50 or more on a week-long trek. However, it is your decision to tip or not. You can also choose not to tip. It is a nice gesture and is regarded as an appreciation of the services offered by the guide and porter.
When to do Everest Base Camp Trek?
The best months to experience the Everest Base Camp Trek are September, October, November, February, March, April and May. These are pre and post-monsoon months. Most of the tea houses offer traditional Nepali food, Dal Bhat (rice and lentil). The food has to be carried by porters and animals to the remote areas and the options on the menu may not be like Kathmandu or groups to pasta, pizzas, due Lukla. There are options for non-veg food but it is wise to keep your stomach in good condition during the trek. Eating three times: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner is mandatory during the trek. Breakfast includes tea, coffee, oatmeals, omelette, chapati, jam and fruit juice. You will have options for lunch and dinner ranging from Tibetian bread, and saplings and Dal Bhat.
Is there electricity and network for cell-phones?
Most of the places do have electricity on route to Everest Base Camp operated by hydro-power. After Namche Bazaar and Thyangboche electricity is private to the lodge and tea houses. Some places do have networks for cell phones and as well for Internet & Wi-Fi. Dingboche and some areas do not offer consistent network connections due to remoteness. At present, nearly all places in Nepal including remote villages do have mobile phone network coverage.
Is Everest Base Camp Trek safe?
Yes, Everest Base Camp Trek is safe but it has its risks due to its geography. The chances of the trek being unsafe is fairly low if health conditions and fitness are good.
