Trek Overview

You can reach Rara Lake in various ways. You can take a flight to land near the lake and trek for few hours or travel via land all the way or take a flight to Nepalgunj and then head towards Rara on a drive. We normally prefer flight, taking flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, and a next flight on a smaller aircraft to reach the entrance of Rara Lake in Talcha airport. You can also customize the trip if you want to include drive or motorbike ride to Rara.

You’ll reach Rara Lake after a hike of not more than 4 hours from the airport. Murma is the viewpoint from where you can see the whole lake. You’ll  spend a few days within the lovely surrounding of Rara Lake with nice views and peaceful environment before heading back to Kathmandu.

Rara Lake Nepal Trek Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
Day 02: In Kathmandu with the half-day tour and fly to Nepalgunj city.
Day 03: Flight from Nepalgunj to Tallcha airport and transfer to lodge.
Day 04: Trek from Tallcha to Murma 3,800 meters and reach at Hotel Rara View – 04 hrs.
Day 05-6: Explore around Rara Lake 2,990 m and enjoy the views.
Day 07: Trek to Talcha for an overnight stop.
Day 08: Morning flight to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotels.

Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

On arrival at Kathmandu airport received by our guide and staff with transportation to your respective hotels in the hub of Kathmandu at Thamel, an exciting place in Kathmandu, after checking in your rooms join with the group for Rara lake Journey where briefing provided by our guides or leaders. The evening includes a group welcome dinner in a pleasant authentic Nepalese Restaurant with culture programs with your dinner.

Day 2
In Kathmandu with half-day tour and fly to Nepalgunj city.

Morning sightseeing tour around interesting places of Kathmandu visiting world heritage sites of great wonders, where Hindu and Buddhism religions blend in perfect harmony.mAfter an interesting tour with time to refresh and transfer to Kathmandu domestic air-terminal for a scenic sweeping flight to land at Nepalgunj airport, during air grand views of the Himalayan range of mountains. At Nepalgunj transfer to its city hotels, with time to explore this interesting city similar to Indian Hindu culture with some Muslim people as this areas situated close to India border within Nepal Far South West of a sub-tropical climate.

Day 3
Flight from Nepalgunj to Talcha airport and transfer to lodge.

Morning another connecting flight of short hours in a smaller aircraft to land at Talcha a new airstrip close to Rara Lake, here received by our staff and the walk to your lodge for overnight within close to Rara Lake area, here with time in the afternoon to roam around its bazaar of great interest to witness local people of Far Western Nepal.

Day 4
Trek from Talcha to Murma 3,800 meters and reach at Hotel Rara View - 04 hrs.

With an interesting overnight stop at Talcha, where morning starts walking on the gradual path and then climb up to a ridge to reach a scenic spot in Murma located on a high hilltop, this will be the highest point of the journey. On reaching to your lodge with time to enjoy views of surrounding beautiful landscapes covered with pristine forest and snow-capped peaks.

Day 5
Explore around Rara Lake 2,990 m and enjoy the views.

We have reserved two free days around this marvellous location where you can soak into beautiful surrounding with dramatic landscapes facing views of high mountains, a pleasant walk to reach our destination at Rara Lake, around the lake with few lodges built by the Park and village community for visitors. A perfect and ideal place to enjoy rest of the days, explore around this fabulous area where foreign visitors seldom venture this beautiful area of Rara Lake, climb to a wooden tower for best views of Rara Lake with surrounding beautiful rolling green hills and snowcapped peaks.

Day 6
Rest Day Or Yours Choice To escape

Trek to Talcha for overnight stop.

Morning catching 380° panorama of stunning views of landscapes with Rara Lake and its surrounding lovely woodland including distant high snow-clad peaks, after breakfast walk back to Talcha for last overnight around the marvelous country of Rara Lake.

Day 8
Fly back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj afternoon free at leisure.

As per flight time for Nepalgunj city, morning with final moment within Rara Lake at Mugu district walk to its small airstrip, where short scenic flight drops you at Nepalgunj airport, here with time for refreshment before connecting flight in a larger plane to Kathmandu taking approx: 50 minutes to reach Kathmandu, after an exciting flight with mountain views on reaching at the airport transfer for a short ride to your hotel, after a most remarkable adventure on Upper Dolpo afternoon with ample time for individual activities and shopping souvenirs.

Day 9
International departure homeward bound.

How tough is the trip to Rara Lake?

Depending on how you take it, you must be aware that Nepal and all Himalayan countries a
hilly and mountainous area, where much of the walk leads to ups and down with some gradual winding trail to cope. However, on this journey which is similar to other Himalayan walks, the only long and steep climb is going up to Murma for few hours, and then with an easy gradual walk to your hotel and lodge facing views of the lake. As we have maintained walking itinerary days to suit interested people to enjoy scenic views with time to acclimatize with the altitude.

What are the religion and cultures that we can witness?

Around Nepal, Far West within Rara Lake with more Hindu with hill tribe known as Thakuri Malla and Rokka Chettries with Brahmin people and Dalits includes some Magar and highland people of Tibetan origin with same Buddhist culture and religion, a fascinating place to visit with an interesting culture of ancient heritage and traditional farm life.

How many people will be in the group?

From the minimum 4-10 person in the group with a maximum of 10-15 persons in the group, in some cases we do allow booking for a single person as well, running an independent at extra cost than in groups.

How is the weather around Rara Lake?

As per the season wise, where the best time is from March to May when most of the day is clear with minimum temperatures of 0° to 20° Celsius depending upon the altitude and areas. Where most of the morning till mid-days clears for views and walks, sometimes afternoon can get overcast with chances of light rains and snow.

How are the lodge and Tea-House on Treks?

Tea-House or Lodge around Rara Lake with nice and simple offers basic facilities due to its
remote location.

Are there electricity and network for cell-phones?

Most of the places do not have electricity on route trekking some village run by its own small hydro-power like in Talcha much of electric supply is private and individual of the village and some lodge owners with sun / solar power to activate electric just for the lodge and as well for customers to charge their computers and cell-phones. Some places do have networks for cell phones and as well for internets like Wi-Fi above Rara Lake and villages on route, where networks are disturbed in deep gorge and valleys.
At present nearly all people in Nepal including remote villages do have an assist to cell-phones with fine network connection only in bad weather the line can be broken, otherwise it is fine in working order.

What happens if some is sick and have to break the trek?

In this situation where our guides are well equipped with knowledge for emergency and medical purpose, depending upon the seriousness of the victims if it is much critical where nearest medical attention needed, we call for immediate evacuation for Helicopter services to
reach the victims to nearest medical station and hospital. For light AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), resting and drinking enough fluid leaving an extra guide to taking care of sick clients till he/she recovers on route treks or help them to descend to safer areas and taking an advance flight back to Nepalgunj or Kathmandu.

How are foods and hygiene during treks?

Meals are prepared by our head camping chef with varied items, all foods are carefully
prepared with much hygiene concern, with good breakfast-lunch and dinner with afternoon tea and snacks prepared by the lodge cook and staff.

What types of medication should I bring from home for the trek?

In our list, we always mention general medication to bring from home as well from your doctor advice also, your doctor might recommend you some basic medication list like medicine against diarrhea, headache, fever, cold-flu as well constipation including first aid for cuts-wounds and burns as well.
In every trip of ours, we carry comprehensive medical kits which will be carried by our staff, guides or group leader for common use if required as for your own personal illness, where your doctors might have recommended some medicine to carry with you.

What are the major factors and precaution one should take care on treks?

Always abide by the rules of the company and guides/leader, most of the main sickness is stomach disorder due to a change in foods and culture shocks. If people have traveled in Asia countries and know the food well will be not a problem.
Other factors might lead to altitude sickness known as AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) which can happen to many people if they are not careful by walking fast in higher elevation and might catch the symptoms of AMS.
We have designed the itinerary days where people can acclimatize well with rest days in a couple of high places before reaching much higher to our goal and highlights.
Some people might take Diamox pills, which is often used as high altitude pills, should consult the doctors before taking the right dose, which helps to regulate the flow of blood systems from getting clots in high altitude. Where drinking plenty of fluids, water-juice and rehydration drink including black warm tea also help and taking much rest after getting tired.
