On the second day of our Tibet tour package, we will first visit Potala Palace. This palace was built by Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century after his marriage to the Chinese princess Wencheng. The Potala was built on the red hills of Lhasa. In the mid 17th century, the 5th Dalai Lama extended it to the present size and since then it became the winter palace of all Dalai Lamas.

The construction took 50 years from its beginning to completion. The palace is divided into two sections: Red and White Palace. The major attraction of the Potala Palace is its structure within an area of 115703 sq.m., gold roof, huge statues, 698 murals, and the landscape. Residing at the elevation of 3700m,

Potala Palace is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Founded by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. Named after the majestic Mount Potalaka, the Potala Palace is employed as the winter palace by the Dalai Lama. Another prominent monastery to visit in Tibet is the sacred Jokhang temple which is situated 1000m ahead of Potala palace on the east side.

Jokhang temple is situated in the centre of the old section of Lhasa. It is a religious structure which was built by Songtsen Gampo in the mid 7th century when he ordered to install of a Buddha image which was brought as a part of dowry by Nepali princess Bhrikuti. Being extended by various rulers, it has now become a gigantic artistic and splendid complex. It has four temples and a golden rooftop.

Inside the main entrance, there are statues of four great kings. There are important chapels and images among which are the chapel of Guru Rinpoche, Tsongkhapa, Eight Medicine Budhha, Jowo Shakyamuni, and so on. From the rooftop, one can see the amazing panorama view of the Barkhor Bazaar where pilgrims will be either walking around the temple as Kora or paying

homage in front of the prominent temple. Vendors can be seen selling antique items, handicrafts, local-made souvenirs, Tibetan artistic goods, etc. You can try Tibetan tea and ther new dishes of Tibetan culture to tease your taste buds.

Founded by Jamyang Qoigyi, the disciple of Tsong Khapa in 1416, it resides 8 km uphill from Lhasa to Mount Gambo Use.

Drepung is now an influential university for the Buddhist monks but it hasn’t dropped its Tibetan essence and the Tibetan culture which can be perceived in the preserved chapels, statues, paintings, arts, structures, and sculptures.

The elevated walk to the Wangbur mountain leads us to the Sera monastery. Jamchen Chojey founded this complex in 1419 but was severely damaged in 1959 during a revolt in Lhasa killing many monks. Later on, Sera Me and Sera Je colleges were built which function as of
