On the first day, we will depart Kathmandu towards Paro. A joyful 1 hour and 10 minutes flight from Kathmandu will take you to Paro. Paro is a small yet beautiful valley in Bhutan where the only international airport of Bhutan is situated. It will also be the place where we will take rest and get ready for a hike the next day.

The second day of Chomolhari trek is marked as an acclimatization day. Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) is a popular monastery located at a cliff of Paro valley. The path to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery is a little tough one so, hike to Paro Taktsang will be a good way to acclimatize. The amazing construction of this monastery is a treat to the eyes. You can photograph it from the outside but cameras and mobile phones are prohibited inside. There are a number of huge rooms, beautiful paintings, astonishing statues inside the Tiger’s Nest monastery which you can view from the vicinity.

The journey from Paro to Shana encompasses the striking beauty of Drugyel Dzong which is an ancient ruin that served as a Buddhist monastery in the past. It has been declared as UNESCO world heritage site as it is the witness of Bhutan’s long victorious history. A downhill walk across Drungyel Dzong takes us to the dense forest, serene rivers, rice and millet fields, and the view of high mountains. After a 5-6 hrs long trekking, we will reach Shana. The people at Shana has a simple lifestyle that includes herding yaks, collecting herbs, making milk products, etc. We can have camping experience at Shana as well.

The journey from Shana to Soi Thangthangkha will bless your eyes with the beautiful scenario of Mt. Chomolhari. We will enter the Jigme Dorji National Park. We will be spending 7-8 hrs walking forest paths up and down. The winding paths will eventually lead us to our camp at Soi Thangthangkha.

After the majestic view of Mt. Chomolhari and quick breakfast, we will ascend to the army camp through dense forests, tranquil villages, and roaring river streams. You can try the tasty yak cheese and fruit wine at Jangothang and experience the warm the hospitality of Bhutanese there.

The sixth day at Jangothang is a resting day for us. It will be an opportunity to stretch our legs to Jichu Drake Peak. You can even see blue sheep on the way. We can also go to an adventurous trek to Tshopu. As we approach Jumolhari Base Camp, we will get a glimpse of vistas of Jumolhari or Chomolhari mountain and Jichu Drake.

We climb a height of 4850m to reach Nyele La Pass and witness the high peaks by the vicinity. We gradually descend the pass through the dense rhododendron forest and reach Lingshi. A 7-8 hrs long trek from Jangothang to Lingshi will leave us tired so, we will rest the night at Lingshi.

On the 8th day, we will trek the Chomolhari route towards Mo chu valley at the south. The trekking trials are mostly bare lands so you won’t see much trees around. Crossing a stream we will elevate towards Yele La Pass (4950m). Mountains like Chomolhari, Gangchhenta, Tserim Khang and Masang Gang are the major attractions during the trek from Lingshi to Shodu. We will descend down alongside a stream to reach Shodu which is our destination for today. After 8-9 hours long trek, we will call it a day.

The path from Shodu to Barshong encompasses dense rhododendron forest and Thimphu chhu river. A gradually elevated 6-7 hours will take us to the ruins of Barshong Dzong monastery. Barshong Dzong, probably some three centuries old, now serves as a shelter for 300 monks. Monks reside at the ruins of religious Barshong Dzong monastery because there is no proper concrete monastery around. We will spend a night at Barshong.

We’re again crossing Thimpu chhu river and dense rhododendron forests to make our way to Dolam Kencho (3600m). We will cross dense bamboo, alpine, juniper, and pine forest as we descend. Within 4-5 hours, we will reach Dolam Kencho where we will stay overnight.

The trekking trials from Dolam Kencho stretches to Dodena from where we will trek down to Thimpu. Once we reach Thimpu, our Chomolhari trek will come to an end. After a 5-6 hours trek to Thimpu, we will take rest and rejuvenate ourselves for the departure.

The 12th day is the departure day which also marks the last day of Chomolhari trek. We will travel from Thimpu to Paro and take a flight from Paro to Kathmandu.
