Gokyo Lake Trek Overview

Gokyo Lake Trek its beautiful lakes are one of the less-visited locations in the Everest region. Situated in the eastern parts of the Khumbu Valley, the trek ensures glorious vistas of the Everest ranges. Thus, the Gokyo Valley Trek is one that garners ethnic Sherpa culture in the laps of Mt. Cho Oyu (8201m) in the Gokyo Valley. With the natural riches of Sagarmatha National Park, the trek also offer plenty of sightings of Mt. Everest (8488m). All in all, the Gokyo Valley trek is ideal for those with limited time to explore the Everest region.

Firstly, you will arrive in Nepal and land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Here, you will visit some of the world heritage sites enlisted by UNESCO. Also, you can prepare for the trek while exploring the city. Then, a short flight will take you to Lukla as you enter the Everest region.

Following the Dudh Koshi River, you will ascend to Phakding. Further, you enter the Sagarmatha National Park and walk with the company of the Kongde ranges. Trekking past Monjo, you reach Namche Bazaar where you can acclimatize to cope with the altitude. From here, the trail deviates from the EBC trail and heads to Dhole via Phortse Tenga.

The next destination on the trek is Machhermo from where the trail ascends to Gokyo. You can explore Longponga Tsho and Taujung Tsho on the way to Gokyo. Finally, you will reach Gokyo village situated to the north of Gokyo Lake. Then, you hike to the nearby peak called Gokyo Ri (5360m). From here, you can relish the vista of mountains like Cho Oyu, Nuptse (7861m), and Mt. Everest (8848m).

After the hike, you descend back to Gokyo and begin the return trek. After you retrace your steps to Dhole, you will trek south towards Namche. Following the Dudh Koshi River further south, the trail exits the national park and reaches Lukla. Finally, a flight back to Kathmandu brings the trip to a close. It is a moderately difficult trek and trekkers should be in good physical condition. Also, the autumn and spring seasons are the best times to do the Gokyo Valley trek.
