Expand all

Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by one of our representatives at the airport. S/he will help you get transferred to your Hotel. You will also meet our staff at the Hotel. More information will be provided to you about the trip.

You will then head towards the airport for your Lukla flight in the morning. The short flight is quite amazing as it presents aerial views of the Himalayan periphery of Nepal. The sight of the peaks rising against the low-lying valleys is like looking at a canvas dotted with small villages, farmlands, and gorges with the backdrop of the majestic Himalayas. Upon landing at Lukla, you will begin your trek to Phakding- a famous Himalayan village of the Khumbu lying just north of Lukla. It is a rather easy trek where you can enjoy the tranquil ambience of the Khumbu and take in the Himalayan surrounding. The trail goes through forest-covered hills, and when you approach Phakding, you will get your first view of the sacred Kusum Kangraru Peak.

Following the trail that snakes through the Dudh Koshi River Valley towards Namche, you will be presented with the magnificent Himalayas decorating the horizon.

Making your way down the hill towards the river, the path runs by the banks of the Dudh Koshi until you reach Monjo. The entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park is situated here. The trek through the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site- the Sagarmatha National Park, presents lush green alpine forests of aromatic pine and scented cedar trees. The woods are home to a wide species of Himalayan birds and small animals of the river valley. Along the journey, you can catch glimpses of the Danphe birds and small forest animals like the Musk Deer.

Gaining a steady altitude, you will trek up the hill again away from the river towards Namche Bazaar. It is one of the most famous towns of the Khumbu from where captivating views of peaks like the Kongde RI, the Thamserku, Everest, and the Ama Dablam among many more can be seen. Namche Bazaar is a major commercial hub of the region. It was also a major trading point for Nepali and Tibetan traders in ancient times. Traders of the lowlands and the Himalayan people used to exchange salt, textiles, and meat.

Trekking further into the Dudh Koshi valley, you will pass by Phungki Thanka and make your way from Pheriche to Thyangboche village. Crossing a suspension bridge over the Imja River, you will make your way through the trans-Himalayan woodlands that carpet the hills to Thyangboche. The village is situated at the confluence of the Dudh Koshi and the Imja Rivers.

Moreover, the ridges that surround the village are blanketed with rhododendron trees home to many Himalayan eagles. The views of the mountain peaks like the Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Lhotse, Nuptse, Changtse, Everest and many more from the village are also absolutely breathtaking. You can also visit the famous Thyangboche Monastery here. It is a spiritual centre of the region and the largest Buddhist shrine. You can take blessings from the monk at the monastery and light a few butter lamps offering prayers for a successful trip. The monastery is also where the celebration of the Mani Rimdu Festival takes place.

The path snakes through jade bamboo woods up and down the valley towards Dingboche. The tall ivory peaks of Everest keep you company along the journey. You will cross a suspension bridge over the Imja River and pass through the village of Pangboche on your way.

The terrain is quite dense and the trans-Himalayan landscape is filled with small brooks and streams flowing through the chartreuse forests of rhododendrons and juniper, flanked by occasional tall cliffs ornamented with moss and ferns. Dingboche is situated snugly amidst the hills of the Imja River Valley and is also famously referred to as ” the summer valley” of the region.

From Dingboche, the trail coruscates alongside the Imja River and branches up the valley towards Lobuche. It is a small settlement that towered over the Lobuche Peaks. The trek is moderate, with the path going through rocky terrains and steadily gaining elevation. As you progress, you can also notice the terrain changing from greener pastures to barren rocky boulders and snowy grounds. You will pass Pheriche where the Trekker’s Aid Post is located. The Aid Post is run by western volunteer doctors and oversees the minor treatment of trekkers. Further along from Pheriche, the path leads to Chupki Lharka, a rocky terrain strewn with large boulders. The Khumbu Glacier moraine is situated ahead. Views of mountain peaks like Khumbutse, the Mahalangur Himal, Lingtren and the Pumori from the glacier moraine are quite enchanting. Once the glacier passes, you can also see Mount Nuptse on the horizon.

From Lobuche, you will make your way to Gorakshep- a sparsely populated settlement that used to be the original base camp. From there, you will finally hike towards the base camp of Mount Everest located a few miles up the terrain. Upon reaching the base camp, you can take in the scenery of the Khumbu Icefall and the Khumbu Glacier- the largest glacier in the country. During peak expedition time, the base camp becomes a vibrant tapestry of colourful tents set up in the snowy fields by climbers doing the Everest expedition. After sending time at the base camp, you will return to Gorakshep.

Waking up before dawn, you will make your way to the vantage point of Kalapatthar. It is the most famous vantage point of Khumbu that presents the beguiling and other-worldly view of the entire Mount Everest massif. Kalapatthar is known for its sunrise view amidst the peaks. The mountains change colour from silver to gold as the sun slowly spreads its golden rays over the peaks. It is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. After enjoying Kalapatthar, you will make your way back to Pheriche, trekking along the familiar pathway. The journey downhill is easier.

Trekking back down the valley, you will traverse along the hillside trek to Namche. Crossing the Imja River again, you will reach Thyangboche. From there, trek through the ridgelines of the gaping open valleys to Namche Bazaar.

Back through the Dudh Koshi River valley, you will pass by Phakding and Monjo, exit the national park and trek back to Lukla. Once there, you have the rest of the time to yourself, which you can spend exploring the village, talking to the locals and relaxing.

Catching an early flight back to Kathmandu, you will bid goodbye to the mountains for the last time. Back in the city, you can spend your time as you please, resting or shopping, as per your preference.

However, once you move away from the cities, the options for meals and accommodations in Nepal will become limited. During the treks, the best accommodations available are lodges and teahouses. They provide basic facilities for dining and lodging. These places mostly serve traditional Nepali food “Daal Bhat Tarkari” (rice, pulses, and vegetables). Similarly, there are several other food varieties like Momo, Thukpa, Thakali food, and pasta pizza available across Nepal.

Things to do in Nepal

The nation is considered to be a paradise for trekkers and grants an exciting number of choices. On these treks, you will witness the grand views of the Himalayas and the cultural prosperity of the ethnic communities along the trails. Everest Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Base Camp Trek are two of the most popular treks in Nepal.

For those who are not satisfied with just gazing up at the mountains, you can go for a mountaineering expedition and peak climbing. While expeditions take you to mountains above the height of 6,500 meters, the destinations of peak climbing trips are low-lying peaks which can be summited even by amateurs. Everest (8848m), Annapurna (8091m), and Ama Dablam (6856m) are popular expedition sites whereas Island Peak (6189m), Mera Peak (6476m), and Pisang Peak (6091m) are the notable peak climbing destinations.

Short tours and sightseeing in Nepal are also quite popular among travellers in Nepal. Likewise, adventure sports like rafting, bungee jumping, paragliding, canyoning, rock climbing, zip-lining, and mountain biking are also among the things that can be done in Nepal.

Trekking Seasons in Nepal

The country lies in the temperate zone and has four distinct climates: spring, summer (with monsoon), autumn, and winter. Normally, the best time to trek in Nepal is in March-May (spring) when the skies are clear, trails are filled with blooming flora, and the temperature is just right.

Another appropriate season is mid-September to November (autumn), during which the temperature is moderate, the skies are clear, and mountain views are stunning. The summer season (June – August) is occupied by heavy rainfall increasing the chances of landslides in the hills, while the winter season brings in harsh weather conditions and extreme cold. However, there are treks which can be done during winter and monsoon as well.

Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang regions lie in the rain-shadow area so, they are ideal trek destinations during monsoon. Likewise, easy and low-altitude treks like Ghorepani Poonhill and Tamang Heritage Trek are perfect during the winter season.

Read our blog on Best Season to Trek in Nepal for more info.

Altitude Sickness

While trekking in Nepal is extremely satisfying, altitude sickness might get a better hold of you at times. The air pressure and oxygen concentration decrease the higher you travel.

As such, altitude sickness is an illness that the human body suffers from due to these reasons. The symptoms of the sickness include lack of appetite, nausea, weakness, lightheartedness, sleep disturbance, tiredness, and headache. These symptoms generally appear when moving upwards of the height of 2,400 meters from sea level.

You can adopt different measures to avoid altitude sickness like a walk at a slow and steady pace, avoiding smoking, and stopping at different stations to acclimatize. Before beginning your trek, make sure you have a first aid kit with ibuprofen or paracetamol and Diamox. If anyone falls victim to altitude sickness, it is necessary to inform the trip leader and descend to a lower altitude. In extreme cases, it might also be necessary to perform Heli rescue and emergency evacuations.

Travel Insurance

Accidents can happen anywhere so, it is recommended that all tourists get travel insurance before visiting Nepal. Depending upon the insurance policy and the company, the insurance will look after tragic like theft, loss or accidental damage of gears and other belongings, baggage, and medical emergencies. Likewise, the insurance should also include helicopter evacuation and any kinds of mishaps that might occur during adventure sporting like bungee jumping, rafting, and zip-lining. No one is capable of foreseeing accidents, but each individual can buy an insurance policy to lessen the effects of the accident.

Banking, ATMs, and Money in Nepal

Nepalese Rupees is the official currency of Nepal. The banknotes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 whereas coins of 1 and 2 are available in Nepal.

While travelling to Nepal, banking and money exchange are not a huge deal in big cities like Pokhara and Kathmandu. When you head to rural areas, the availability of banks, ATMs, and money exchange booths becomes fairly scarce. So, it is best to withdraw enough cash and exchange the currency in major cities. You can also exchange foreign currencies for Nepali Rupees at the Tribhuvan International Airport. You need to be updated about the exchange rates which are available at the official website of Neal Rastra Bank at https://www.nrb.org.np/fxmexchangerate.php.

Internet and Communication

It is quite easy to access the Internet in Nepal. Using Wi-Fi is a widely used way to communicate and use the Internet. Wi-Fi is easily available in major cities and even in some remote destinations. When trekking to remote locations, Wi-Fi might not always be available; so, using cellular data is the best way to communicate over the Internet. You can buy a Sim-card in Nepal at a reasonable price which allows you to make an international call. Also, you can use mobile data while you are in areas without Wi-Fi.  Telephone, Fax, and newspapers are a few other forms of communication in Nepal.

Health and Safety Including Traveling alone in Country

The country is very safe for all tourists and travellers. The country is not experiencing any armed conflicts, religious wars, or grave crimes. Travelling alone is also perfectly sage and you will find willing Nepalese to help you with your travel issues. We also advise solo travellers to inform their loved ones and authorities like local police about their travel destination and itinerary to remain on the safe side. However, there are many issues that you need to consider to trek alone. So, you should have ample knowledge and idea before going on a solo trek.

Likewise, there is a Tourist Police department in Nepal which looks after the welfare and safety of the travellers. You can learn more about them at the official website of the Nepal Tourism Board at https://www.welcomenepal.com/plan-your-trip/tourist-police.html.

In case of medical emergencies during your trek, you can visit the nearest health post which provides basic medical services. If the medical complication persists, you’ll have to head to the hospitals in towns and cities. Similarly, it is also necessary to follow a healthy and hygienic lifestyle when travelling in Nepal to stay fit and healthy.

Everest Base Camp Trekking Permits

The government of Nepal has imposed permit fees to trek and explore various regions in Nepal. Permits are important to your safety and also for records. These are the permits you should obtain for the trek: Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit- NPR 2,000 per person issued in the Everest region and Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit – NPR 3,000 per person can be obtained in Kathmandu as well as in Everest region. You can get all of these permits on your own and you’ll need your passport to issue the permits. Also, we can also issue the correct permits if necessary.
