Trip Overview

Pikey Peak Trek is a short and scenic adventure to the lower Solukhumbu areas to experience glorious mountain views.

The journey starts as you take a flight from Kathmandu to Phaplu airport. You’ll then trek through the amazing landscapes and warming villages of lower Solu areas towards Pikey Peak which offers amazing panoramic views of mountain ranges. It does not take more than a couple of days to trek to reach Pikey Hilltop but you can witness and experience a lot in these two days.

The adventure leads you into the serene forests decorated with tall rhododendron, magnolia, pines, oaks and firs. In spring, the hills are alive when wildflowers bloom. Other, especially varied species of rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal are also found in the region. On this trek, you can witness Buddhist culture around the Sherpa villages of the lower Solukhumbu areas from the Everest region. The rural lives are interesting to see and experience. The wonderful adventure completes as you return to Phaplu for a panoramic flight back to Kathmandu.

Pikey Peak trek is a newly opened trekking route in the Everest region that takes you around remote corners of the lower Solukhumbu district which lies south of Everest. Pikey Peak (Hill) at 4,302m (14,114 ft) is famous for the panoramic view of the towering peaks including Mt. Everest, Ganesh, Langtang, Jugal, Gaurishankar, Kanchenjunga and Mu lung Tse.

Despite being a short trip, the trek offers amazing views, tranquil landscapes, cultural insights of the Everest region and also off beaten trekking experience. Being an adventure around remote corners of lower Solukhumbu, the trekking route leads you on less ventured trails of the Everest Region.

Pikey Hill Everest Trek Itinerary

Day 01: On arrival at Kathmandu airport (1,340m) and transfer to hotel.
Day 02: At Kathmandu with options for sightseeing tours and trek preparations.
Day 03: Fly to Phaplu and transfer to the lodge with a free afternoon to explore the area.
Day 04: Trek to Jampre (2,920m) – 5/6 hrs.
Day 05: Trek to Pikey Base Camp (3,640m) – 5/6 hrs.
Day 06: Trek to Pikey Hilltop (4,302 m) for sunrise views of mountains and trek to lodge (2,515m) – 6/7 hrs.
Day 07: Trek to Phaplu (2,413m) – 5/6 hrs.
Day 08: Fly to Kathmandu from Phaplu and transfer to the hotel.
Day 09: Free day in Kathmandu.
Day 10: International departure.

Pikey Peak Trek Difficulty

Pikey Peak Trek is an easy trek and can be completed by most trekkers. It is suitable for people of all ages and most fitness levels. However, being in good shape physically and mentally will definitely help you on the trek. You will have to trek for four days in total and this can decrease if you are an experienced trekker.

Pikey Peak Location

Pikey Hill is located in the lower areas of the Solukhumbu district. Junbesi, Phaplu and Salleri are major nearby hill towns. Tea Houses and lodges are available around the peak. It can either be trekked from Salleri, Dhap and also from Junbesi giving you extra options. The trek can be extended to visit all these places and complete a round trek.

Pikey Peak Height

Pikey Peak (Hill) stands at an altitude of 4,302m (14,114 ft). It is not one of the highest spots in the Everest Region but it does offer one of the best panoramic views of the mountains. Also, the chances of altitude sickness are slim.

Day 1 Arrival at Kathmandu airport 1,340m and transfer to hotel.

You’ll land at Kathmandu Airport to be greeted by us. We’ll then drive you to your hotel. Also, our guide will brief you about the trek and also tell you more about Nepal along with do’s and don’ts.

In the evening, you’ll enjoy a grand welcome dinner in a typical Nepalese restaurant with local cultural entertainment.
Day 2 Free Day in Kathmandu with options for trek preparation.

On this day, you’ll be free in Kathmandu. You can go for a sightseeing tour in Kathmandu or you can also choose to prepare for the trek. Kathmandu is full of places to see. So, the sightseeing is something you would not want to miss.
Day 3 Fly to Phaplu and transfer to lodge with afternoon free to explore

The 30-minute flight to Phaplu normally takes off in the morning. You can see the mountains and landscapes of the Everest Region through your window.

You will stop at Phaplu overnight. The village is inhabited mostly by Sherpa people with some Rai, Magar and Tamang. You can walk around to observe Sherpa farm villages enriched with Buddhist religion and colourful culture.
Day 4 Trek to Jampre 2,920m - 5/6 hrs

Easy moderate walks on winding trail heading past farms and villages with distant views of snow-capped peaks towards the north is a common experience on the trek. The first-day trek continues with a few stops to observe local farm life, and witness villagers and children as the walk leads further west to reach Jampre for an overnight stop, a moderate size farm village with time to interact with the locals.
Day 5 Trek to Pikey Peak Base Camp 3,640m - 06 hrs

The second day of the trek leads us closer to our major destination leaving farm villages and human settlements. The walk takes you through lovely dense woodland covered with tall rhododendron, magnolia, oaks, hemlocks, pines and fir trees. Walks will slowly lead to a small grazing pasture for domesticated animals of the local villages.

Pikey Hill trek is slowly getting popular where few simple lodges have been established around for the comfort of travellers. You’ll stay overnight at Pikey Base Camp and be ready for next early morning hike to Pikey Peak top.
Day 6 Trek to Pikey Hill top (4,302 m) 14,114 ft for sunrise panorama of mountains and trek down to Loding (2,515m) - 5/6 hrs

Starting early morning and carrying a pack lunch the walk leads to the well-maintained path within a deep forest area. Trek continues with some refreshing breaks in between, and then finally reaches our much-awaited highlight of the adventure, Pikey Peak. It’s the highest spot of the journey at above 4,302m where you’ll face an outstanding panorama of mountain ranges of mountains and the sunrise.

Pikey Peak top offers views of Ganesh, Langtang, Jugal, Gaurishankar, Melung Tse Number and Mt. Everest. After witnessing the amazing sunrise, walking downhill takes you to a nice village; Lodging for an overnight stop.
Day 7 Trek to Phaplu 2,413 m - 05 hrs

The walk starts in the morning on the same scenic path downhill and into a cool coniferous forest to reach back at Sherpa village of Phaplu. You’ll have time to explore around with the last overnight in Solukhumbu.
Day 8 Flight from Phaplu to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

An early morning flight will take you back to Kathmandu. You will have time to dwell around the streets of Kathmandu to explore more as it’s your second last day in Nepal.
Day 9 International departure for homeward bound.

We’ll drive you to the airport and the journey finally comes to an end with you returning back to your home.

Usefull Information

Meals and Accommodations:

In major cities like Pokhara and Kathmandu, you will get multiple options to choose from, from cheap lodges to extravagant 5 stars hotels. Likewise, you will also get to choose from a wide range of cuisines while in the major cities. However, once you move away from the cities, the options for meals and accommodations in Nepal will become limited. During the treks, the best accommodations available are lodges and teahouses. They provide basic facilities for dining and lodging. These places mostly serve traditional Nepali food “Daal Bhat Tarkari” (rice, pulses, and vegetables). Similarly, there are several other food varieties like Momo, Thukpa, and Thakali food available across Nepal.

Banking, ATMs, and Money in Nepal:

Nepalese Rupees are the official currency of Nepal. The banknotes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 whereas coins of 1 and 2 are available in Nepal. While travelling to Nepal, banking and money exchange are not a huge deal in big cities like Pokhara and Kathmandu. When you head to rural areas, the availability of banks, ATMs, and money exchange booths becomes fairly scarce. So, it is best to withdraw enough cash and exchange the currency in major cities.

You can also exchange foreign currencies for Nepali Rupees at the Tribhuvan International Airport. You need to be updated about the exchange rates which are available at the official website of Neal Rastra Bank at https://www.nrb.org.np/fxmexchangerate.php.

Sightseeing Tour:

We will brief you about your sightseeing tour in Kathmandu and trekking and we will be giving you information files, and importantly introduced your tour/trekking guide.

Trekking Crews:

You will provide government registered, well-trained English Speaking guide, who has to acknowledge responsible tourism flew of areas and eco-friendly tourism. We also provide an assistant guide (call Sherpa) if you’re in a group of 4-5 people, who are ready to help you with every situation. Also provide one porter is every two members of the group, and he will be carrying a bag pack of not more than 25kg. We get our crews’ life get insured.

Documentation:

After your trip is over, we will provide you (HNA) adventure certificate =region.

Size of Group:

Trekking Group Size of minimum 2-10 people. In case you want to travel alone, please do not hesitate to write back to us. We will plan consequently. In the case your group has more than ten people, please let us know so that we can make advance requirements and improvise plans and itinerary.

Acclimatization:

Trekking in the Everest Region is much more difficult as it is even more technical. We give you special priority to its technical side as well. For this, we have planned an itinerary to allow you to get acclimatize naturally. We know a particular location where you need to stay for rest to acclimatize, and the particular distance you need to walk slowly pace study and so on. In case you get AMS, we have two crews who know how to deal with, it effectively and smartly.

Altitude Sickness:

While trekking in Nepal is extremely satisfying, altitude sickness might get a better hold of you at times. The air pressure and oxygen concentration decrease the higher you travel. As such, altitude sickness is an illness that the human body suffers from due to these reasons. The symptoms of the sickness include lack of appetite, nausea, weakness, lightheartedness, sleep disturbance, tiredness, and headache. These symptoms generally appear when moving upwards of the height of 2,400 meters from sea level.

You can adopt different measures to avoid altitude sickness like a walk at a slow and steady pace, avoiding smoking, and stopping at different stations to acclimatize. Before beginning your trek, make sure you have a first aid kit with ibuprofen or paracetamol and Diamox. If anyone falls victim to altitude sickness, it is necessary to inform the trip leader and descend to a lower altitude. In extreme cases, it might also be necessary to perform Heli rescue and emergency evacuations.

Travel Insurance:

Accidents can happen anywhere so, it is recommended that all tourists get travel insurance before visiting Nepal. Depending upon the insurance policy and the company, the insurance will look after tragic like theft, loss or accidental damage of gears and other belongings, baggage, and medical emergencies. Likewise, the insurance should also include helicopter evacuation and any kinds of mishaps that might occur during adventure sporting like bungee jumping, rafting, and zip-lining. No one is capable of foreseeing accidents, but each individual can buy an insurance policy to lessen the effects of the accident.

Internet and Communication:

It is quite easy to access the Internet in Nepal. Using Wi-Fi is a widely used way to communicate and use the Internet. Wi-Fi is easily available in major cities and even in some remote destinations. When trekking to remote locations, Wi-Fi might not always be available; so, using cellular data is the best way to communicate over the Internet. You can buy a Sim-card in Nepal at a reasonable price which allows you to make an international call. Also, you can use mobile data while you are in areas without Wi-Fi. Telephone, Fax, and newspapers are a few other forms of communication in Nepal.

Things to do in Nepal:

here are two ways to obtain a Nepalese visa. The first one is via the Nepalese Diplomatic Missions stationed in your country. As the second way, you can easily obtain an On-Arrival visa at the entry/exit points stationed across the country. You can fill out an application form and provide the necessary documents to receive an On-Arrival Visa. Travellers can choose different visa types according to the length of their stay in Nepal.

The visa for 15 days costs USD 30, USD 50 for 30 days, and USD 125 for 90 days. Also if your visa is about to expire but you are not yet done exploring the country, you can get your visa extended for USD 3 per day and if your visa has already expired, it costs USD 5 per day. There are numerous travel destinations in Nepal; each with a unique identity and story of its own. Kathmandu is one of such destination, with dozens of sightseeing to do, eateries to try out, and handicrafts to shop. Trekking Seasons in Nepal:

The country lies in the temperate zone and has four distinct climates: spring, summer (with monsoon), autumn, and winter. Normally, the best time to trek in Nepal is in March-May (spring) when the skies are clear, trails are filled with blooming flora, and the temperature is just right.

Another appropriate season is mid-September to November (autumn), during which the temperature is moderate, the skies are clear, and mountain views are stunning. The summer season (June – August) is occupied by heavy rainfall increasing the chances of landslides in the hills, while the winter season brings in harsh weather conditions and extreme cold. However, there are treks which can be done during winter and monsoon as well.

Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang regions lie in the rain-shadow area so, they are ideal trek destinations during monsoon. Likewise, easy and low-altitude treks like Ghorepani Poonhill and Tamang Heritage Trek are perfect during the winter season.
