Everest Region

In what seems like nature’s finest work of art, the Everest region bears the most unique set of culture, history, and ecology in itself. The Everest region lies in the Himalayas which lies to northeastern Nepal. Mt. Everest (8848m) or Sagarmatha (Nepali) is the centrepiece of this region. Likewise, there are numerous other Himalayas which decorate the region including some of the highest in the world like Lhotse (8516m), Makalu (8485m), and Cho Oyu (8201m).

Everest Region features a wide range of topographical diversity which reaches the top of the majestic Sagarmatha standing up to an altitude of 8848m. As such, these massive land elevation differences spark further diversity in climate, ecosystem, and the residing civilization. Having such geographical diversity offers numerous trails for trekking and mountaineering ventures. The variation in the geography of the Everest region can be categorized into three levels:

Khumbu Himal (Highland mountains): Mahalangur and other Himalayan mountain ranges are located in this section. Mount Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), Cho Oyu (8,201m), Gyachung Kang (7,952m), Ama Dablam (6,856m), etc. are some of the world’s highest mountains in this range. These Himalayas are famous for expeditions and peak climbing trails.

Khumbu Region (Highland valley): Khumbu valley is a highland region which is worldwide famous for trekking and hiking. Kulung and Sherpa are the main inhabitants of this region. Villages like Namche, Tengboche, Gokyo, Dingboche, and Thame are the popular Sherpa villages in this region. As such, monasteries in Thame, Pangboche, and Tengboche are some of the illustrious monasteries in the entire Everest region. This region is covered with rhododendron and magnolia forests along with sub-alpine vegetation.

Solu Region (Mid-hills): Lower Solukhumbu is part of the Mid-hills region and is also known as the Rolwaling region. Sherpas are the main inhabitants of this region. Salleri, Chaulakharka, Salyan, Kangel, Sontag, etc. are the popular stops on the trips in lower Solukhumbu. Pikey Peak (4068m) which is one of the finest vantage points also lies in this region.

The majority of the trekking trails in the Everest region lie within the Sagarmatha National Park. The national park provides an ideal conservative area which flaunts species like the snow leopard, mountain sheep, and blue sheep. As such, Everest Base Camp Trek, Gokyo Lake Trek, Three Passes Trek, and Everest Panorama Trek are a few of the treks in this region. Similarly, Lobuche Peak Climbing, Island Peak Climbing, Mera Peak Climbing, and Kyajo Ri Climbing are some of the famous peak climbing destinations. Likewise, Mount Everest Expedition, Ama Dablam Expedition, and Cho Oyu Expedition are the illustrious expeditions in the Everest region.

Autumn (September-November) and spring (March-May) seasons are the ideal seasons to take a trip to the Everest region. Likewise, monsoon (June-August) and winter (December-February) experience harsh weather conditions like heavy rainfall, fog, and snowfall. So, these offer less than perfect conditions to explore the region. Also, the flights to/from Lukla also see frequent delays and cancellations due to these reasons.
